Hearing God's Voice: The Heart of Prophetic Art. Addressing the #1 Challenge Facing Prophetic Artists Today
You are not alone in this struggle
What I hear from prophetic artists more than any other concern is doubts about their spiritual connection and hearing from God. In countless conversations, whether casually in café meet-ups, dedicated painting groups, or ministry settings, this same heart cry emerges. “Is this me, or is it God?”
If you’ve ever found yourself staring at something odd on your canvas, wondering, “What is God showing me?”, or felt frustrated trying to “hear the Lord clearly”, or simply struggling to stay still and find “quiet time to listen to God”, you’re in good company.
These questions reveal hearts that are genuinely hungry for God’s voice but wrestle with the practical realities of spiritual connection. Artists describe feeling caught between two worlds: knowing God has something to say through their art, yet feeling uncertain about what message they’re receiving or how to translate it into creative expression.
The frustration is real. The longing is deep. And … the revelation is that God has designed us purposefully for this kind of intimate communication.
The truth about God’s voice
Every prophetic artist needs to remember that God is always speaking, and He’s speaking your language.
The capacity to hear from God is largely created by the desire to hear from God. He is intentionally communicating in the way He designed you to understand. And that’s unlikely to be the same as the artist beside you. Your way of communicating with God is unique to you.
We were created to hear His voice, but sometimes, as we are pulled into many of life’s circumstances, we become confused, numb to or complacent with the voice of God.
The truth is, we need His voice. We thrive when we’re open and sensitive to hearing Him speak. For each moment of every season, God has something to say. And that something is always filled with His goodness.
When we’re aware of His voice in our lives, we feel connected to Him and can identify His presence. When we’re not aware of His voice, we can feel disconnected, isolated, and even begin to doubt our calling.
But the key is that we can do something about it. It’s our responsibility to stay sensitive to the voice of God. We must pursue Him and stir up our hunger to hear Him. When we do so, His promise is that we’ll find Him (Jeremiah 29:13).
Cultivating a “Burning Heart”
The concept of maintaining a “burning heart” for the Lord is more than poetic language. It’s a practical spiritual reality that transforms how we receive from God. Bill Johnson likens it to a hot water system kept running in the background to ensure instant warmth when we turn the tap on. A burning heart maintains a continuous stream of God’s presence.
This burning heart isn’t about works, performance, or rituals. It’s about cultivating a conscious, affectionate awareness of God that fuels effective prayer and spiritual clarity. When our hearts burn with continuous affection for Him, we experience:
- Sharper spiritual understanding
- Greater closeness to God
- Clearer reception of His voice
- More confident creative expression
Missing this awareness creates spiritual dryness, not because of sin, but because we’re designed for glory and heaven, and anything less feels out of place.
Understanding how God speaks
One of the most liberating truths about hearing God’s voice is understanding that He often speaks in mystery and riddles. This isn’t to confuse us. It’s to draw us into a deeper relationship.
As one seasoned minister explains: “Why does He speak in mystery? Because then you’ll remain longer in His presence. He wants you to engage in dialogue. What did you mean by this? What do you want with me? He wants the exchange, the relational journey. We are not robots commanded to fulfil a commission. We are people in a relational journey, and it requires dialogue.”
God may speak through:
- Impressions and promptings during your creative process
- Images and visions that unfold as you create
- Scripture that suddenly comes alive with new meaning
- Dreams that carry artistic inspiration
- Unexpected confirmations through circumstances or conversations
- That gentle inner knowing when something feels “right”
When we learn to recognise His voice in its many forms, it’s easier to respond with faith than doubt.
Through your history with Him, you learn to recognise how He speaks with you.
Practical steps to hearing more clearly
Cultivate heightened awareness
Like becoming suddenly aware of background music when someone mentions it, we can train ourselves to become more aware of God’s constant presence. He’s always there, we just need to tune in.
Practice: Throughout your day, pause and simply acknowledge, “God, You’re here with me right now.” Let this awareness become as natural as breathing.
Embrace the dialogue
God desires conversation, not just one-way commands. When you sense Him speaking through your art, respond. Ask questions. Seek understanding.
Practice: While creating, maintain an ongoing conversation with God. “Lord, what are You showing me through this colour? What does this image represent? How do You want to use this piece?”
Wait in His presence
Many prophetic artists struggle with rushing the creative process. But God often works in “wait time”, those moments of stillness where revelation comes.
Practice: Before creating, spend time simply sitting in God’s presence without an agenda. Let worship music play. Read Scripture slowly. Allow your heart to connect with His before you pick up your brush or pencil.
Document the journey
God speaks progressively, often building one revelation upon another. Keep a journal of what you sense God showing you, both in your quiet times and during your creative process.
Practice: Write down impressions, even if they seem incomplete. Date them. You’ll be amazed at how God connects the dots over time.
Trust the process
Remember that hearing God’s voice is both a gift and a skill that develops over time. Be patient with yourself as you learn to recognise His communication style.
Practice: Start with small steps. If you sense God leading you to use a particular colour or try a specific technique, step out in faith. The more you practice trusting what you’re receiving, the clearer His voice becomes.
When God’s glory shows up
Here’s the beautiful truth: Things happen in the glory of His presence. When we learn to abide in God’s presence and create from that place of spiritual connection, we become conduits for His supernatural power.
The presence of God, fuelled by the affection of worshipers, can change situations dramatically. Your prophetic art, born from a genuine connection with God’s heart, carries the potential to:
- Heal and transform those who view it
- Prophetically speak into situations and lives
- Release breakthrough in ways you never imagined
- Demonstrate God’s love in tangible, visual form
This is why your struggle to hear God’s voice matters so much. It’s not just about making art—it’s about becoming a vessel through which God’s glory can flow into a world that desperately needs His touch.
Your inheritance as a prophetic artist
You have been given an incredible inheritance: the Holy Spirit Himself as your creative partner. He is not a distant God you’re striving to reach. He lives within you, speaks your language, and desires to create through you in ways that will astound both you and those who encounter your work.
The heightened awareness of God’s presence that you long for isn’t just a nice spiritual experience; it’s your birthright as a believer and your calling as a prophetic artist.
As you pursue this burning heart for God, remember: You’re not trying to conjure up His presence or manufacture His voice. You’re simply learning to recognise what has always been there: a loving Father who has chosen you as His creative partner and who is always, always speaking words of love, purpose, and direction over your life and art.
Your creative journey is meant to be a relational dialogue with the Creator Himself. Step into that reality today. Your art—and the world—will never be the same.
“The Holy Spirit is the central person in our life, and every triumph, every victory, every enablement, every bit of grace—everything that we experience in this life following Jesus is there and active because the Holy Spirit is in our life.”
What would happen if you truly believed this and created from this place of relationship today?
Hi Wendy, Absolutely connecting with everything you have described above. I have been on a difficult journey for about a year now and at the start oif this year started to produce HeArt Works (or Issues of the Heart). I will put them on the Prophetic Artist facebook page once I have a description worded up. Called HeArt Works as the He (the Holy Spirit’s) art works for me in bringing me to a place of emotional healing and growth (I hope you unserstand the word play here that the HS showed me recently). Thanks for the tips and dialogue above as it helps in describing to other Christians why we do our art to glorify God.
